Farrar's Fireworks Stand, 1932

Prior to the state ban on their commercial sale, fireworks were readily available each summer to Middleborough and Lakeville residents as evidenced by this photograph of Farrar's fireworks stand from the summer of 1932.  Local vendors were licensed by the Board of Selectmen to sell fireworks, fire crackers, sparklers and other pyrotechnic novelties, and their locations were required to be situated away from congested areas within town in the event of a mishap.  Farrar's which was long an Everett Square landmark was operated by Percy G. Reed who specialized in the sale of this unique summer staple throughout the 1930s, with business conducted in a small woodframe building erected specifically for the purpose.  The location of the photograph is unknown, though it is believed to have been taken close to the center of Middleborough.
