Roster of Irish-Born Middleborough & Lakeville Residents, 1850

Following is a list of Irish-born residents of Middleborough and Lakeville as recorded in the 1850 Federal Census, showing name, age, occupation and residence. Many of the records are difficult to read and names shown in parenthesis () are as they appear in the original record. Because the unfamiliarity with many of these names, census takers frequently wrote them phonetically and the names in braces [] provide the more likely spelling. The 138 names listed below represented about 2.6 per cent of the population of Middleborough (which then included Lakeville) which totalled 5,336 persons.

Hello. I have been searching in vain for a lost Irish relative who wrote to my mother around 1953, here in County Fermanagh.

He was called George Haslett and he was inquiring about his birth certificate, as he was going to apply for his American pension at that time. He addressed his letters to my mother: GEORGE HASLETT, MFD,MIDDLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS.

I have no idea when he left Ireland or why, although we suspect he was born illegimate which was a stigma in those days. I know he married but may have had no children.

I would appreciate any information on him, as he is family. Yours gratefully, Mervyn Haslett Hall. Email: hamervyn@aol.com
