Many of the records are difficult to read and names shown in parenthesis () are as they appear in the original record. Because the unfamiliarity with many of these names, census takers frequently wrote them phonetically and the names in braces [] provide the more likely spelling. The 138 names listed below represented about 2.6 per cent of the population of Middleborough (which then included Lakeville) which totalled 5,336 persons.
